Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a 2000 year old healing modality that has modern clinical applications. It works by influencing blood flow and nerve pathways, reducing pain and inflammation, and restoring healthy function in body systems.
According to the World Health Organisation, acupuncture is an effective treatment for a large number of conditions as demonstrated in clinical trials including:
Back pain, neck pain and sciatica
Sporting injuries
Headache and migraine
Arthritis and joint pain
Depression, stress and anxiety
Pregnancy and IVF support
Morning sickness, labour facilitation and breech correction
Hayfever and sinusitis
Menstrual pain and gynaecological symptoms
Menopausal symptoms
Gut symptoms including IBS, gastritis, reflux
Facial, jaw and dental pain
Hypertension and stroke rehabilitation
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy symptom relief
Curious about the idea of using needles to reduce your pain, and wonder what acupuncture feels like? You may experience a slight initial sensation with the insertion of these fine needles or you may not feel anything! People generally find the whole experience very relaxing overall. Your first appointment and treatment may take up to 60 minutes and repeat consultations will be 45 minutes.
We may also use an electro-acupuncture machine to reduce certain types of pain and a technique called cupping to relieve muscle tension.
It is important to note that ‘dry needling’ is a different technique to acupuncture. Some practitioners may use this localised approach alongside their other main treatment modality. A registered acupuncturist has studied the sophisticated principles of acupuncture, combining modern clinical applications with traditional methods that have stood the test of time.
